Machine Vision Inspection: What Should The System Prove?

A practical starting point for automated inspection, covering sample variation, lighting, acceptance criteria and handling inspection results.

Turn A Broad Request Into Measurable Checks

An inspection requirement such as check the part is rarely detailed enough to specify a system. Define the features, presence conditions, assembly states or code information that must be checked. Explain what distinguishes an acceptable result from a rejection.

Where measurements are involved, agree the required method and acceptance limits with the project team. The inspection approach must suit the product and process.

Use Representative Sample Sets

A useful trial includes the expected variation in normal production as well as known defects. Surface finish, colour, reflections, orientation and component tolerances can affect an image.

Keep a clear record of what each sample represents. A system demonstrated on a single ideal part has not established how it will behave across the full production range.

Consider Lighting And Mechanical Presentation

Lighting, the camera view and the way the product is held work together. Mechanical access, vibration and the distance to the feature may influence the installation. A controlled presentation can help produce consistent images.

Barcode verification and code reading also need a clear specification. State the code format, required information and the action to take when a result is missing or unreadable.

Define The Response To Each Result

An inspection station needs a defined relationship with the machine controls. Agree how results are associated with the correct part and how a rejected item is handled. Include the response to no result, communication loss or interrupted production.

Where results or images must be stored, specify the records and interfaces. These requirements should be scoped with the customer rather than assumed.

Make Inspection Part Of The Equipment Brief

CPS can discuss vision systems and inspection as part of a manufacturing application. Share representative parts, defect examples and the intended process before selecting equipment.

The aim is an inspection method with an agreed purpose and a defined test approach, integrated into the handling and control sequence of the machine.
