Belt, Roller Or Modular: Choosing The Right Conveyor

A practical guide to matching conveyor systems to your product, production environment and line layout, with support from CPS in Galway, Ireland.

Start With The Product, Not The Conveyor

A conveyor selection starts with the item being moved. Its weight, dimensions, base shape, stability and surface condition influence the conveying method. A small component, a tray and a shipping carton can need very different support and transfer arrangements.

Bring representative samples to the discussion, including the smallest and largest variants. Explain whether the product may touch its neighbours, needs to remain upright, or must arrive at the next machine in a particular orientation.

When A Belt Conveyor Can Help

Belt conveyors provide continuous support beneath the product. They can be useful for small items or products whose base does not suit roller conveying. Transfer gaps, belt tracking, product friction and the required speed all matter.

A belt choice also depends on the working environment. Discuss cleaning methods, materials, potential contamination and any temperature requirements before agreeing the belt and frame construction.

Where Rollers And Modular Systems Fit

Roller conveyors are commonly considered for suitable cartons, trays and other loads with a stable base. Roller spacing and load distribution need to suit the product. Where accumulation is required, the control method should consider contact between loads and the behaviour of the connected machines.

Modular belt and flexible chain systems can support different routes, layouts and product handling arrangements. FlexLink conveyor systems are one option within the CPS conveyor portfolio. The suitable platform depends on the complete application.

Look Beyond The Straight Section

Transfers, bends, accumulation and operator access can determine whether a line works smoothly. Identify where product enters, leaves, changes direction or waits. Include cleaning access, maintenance space and the interface signals between machines.

For installations in an existing factory, drawings and a site survey help establish the available footprint and access route. Confirm those dimensions before committing to a layout.

What To Send CPS

Share your product information, target throughput, available footprint and a sketch of the process. Photographs and a short video of the current operation can help explain the challenge. CPS can discuss conveyor design, product handling and production-line integration from its base in Tuam, Co. Galway.

The right conveyor is the one that suits your product and process. Its final specification should follow an application review rather than a choice based on appearance alone.
